September 2019 Reading Wrap-Up

Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge
(Cruel Beauty Universe, book 1)
Rating:  ★★☆☆☆ – it was ok
Review:  Yes
Format:  Print
Reading Dates:  September 2 – 4
Read Count:  1
Favorite Thing:  Um… Blended fairytales.
Least Favorite Thing:  I rolled my eyes so many times I gave myself a headache.

I had been meaning to read this for at least a year and I grabbed it because I wanted a quick, easy read. It was quick, but it was a little too boring to be “easy” to read. It wasn’t a bad book, it just didn’t meet it’s potential. Check out my review for more details (link above).

Green by Jay Lake
(Green Universe, book 1)
Rating:  ★★☆☆☆ – it was ok
Review:  No
Format:  Print
Reading Dates:  September 5 – 12
Read Count:  1
Favorite Thing:  This quote lol
Least Favorite Thing:  Descriptions ad nauseam…

I read this for a Travelling Book Project I’m participating in as part of a discord book club. It took me a while to get used to the writing style, but once I did I moved through it pretty well. I just didn’t enjoy the actual plot (once the plot actually started) and the way it went from non-magical to magical fantasy out of almost nowhere…

Least Favorite Thing:  Um. I hate Bill.

This book is just such Junk Food. I honestly don’t know why I even read this one after the first one. It’s not my style of novel at all, but I just like the trash I don’t know y’all.

Marked by P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast
(House of Night, book 1)
Rating:  ★★☆☆☆ – it was ok
Review:  No
Format:  Print
Reading Dates:  September 14 – 17
Read Count:  1
Favorite Thing:  Interesting vampire lore.
Least Favorite Thing:  Um… The protag was just soooo OP…

I had trouble connecting to the main character because she was so mentally young. This is not technically a bad thing though, because she was young and this was the first YA book in a while where I’ve actually felt like the protag was their age.

Honestly I’m trash for these books. This is not even my genre. I hate romance books so much, but I cannot stop with these. I bought all the ones the used bookstore had!

They swept through me until I forgot to fight, forgot that I had ever been anything but a palimpsest of memories overwritten by visions.

– Rosamund Hodge, Cruel Beauty

Review: Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

Rating: ★★☆☆☆ – it was ok

I found this book difficult to finish, but it wasn’t all bad. And I know a lot of other people loved this book, so who knows, you might too.

The mythology and blend of fairytales (think rumplestiltskin + beauty and the beast + greek mythology + something else) was pretty interesting and the writing was decent. Unfortunately that’s about where my praise ends.

The whole plot of her “mission” really drags and drags and gets nowhere for the majority of the book. At one point the author resorts to changing an entire character’s personality out of nowhere in a desperate attempt to move the plot along.

And of course there’s the unexplained fact that Nyx is extra special and “not like other wives girls” that is never even remotely justified in the text, just commented on and forgotten.

What really got me, though, were the romances. They were both extremely insta-lovey and contrived. Like she kisses one for no reason after just meeting him and now she’s in love and then the other she hates except his shoulder? was? attractive? and now she has to fight her love for him and also have sex in a magic sky garden? The only redeeming factor of the world’s most unromantic love triangle was the way it wound up being resolved. I have definitely never seen that in a story before and I have to admit it was interesting, if not entirely surprising.

The ending was odd in that it felt both rushed and too long at the same time. It felt like the elements were kind of jumbled and then there had to be a little up-and-down that was meant, I think, to play on the reader’s emotions, but actually just tried my patience.

All in all I wanted to give it three stars, but I could only justify two and I can’t imagine I’ll read anything by this author again soon.

Books You Didn’t Get to In 2017

These are books you didn’t end up getting to in 2017, but really want to prioritize in 2018.

Throne of Glass series // Sarah J. Maas

When the new book came out (ha…not even the most recent new book) I decided I needed to reread the whole series if I was going to have any idea what was going on. Of course, that was the end of 2016, and then with yet another new one coming out in 2017 I figured I would get to it at some point… Wrong!

Crimson Bound by Rosamund Hodge

I’ve literally had this for almost an entire year, completely intending to read it, and then just…not…doing…that…. I have no excuse at all honestly. Especially considering all the good things I’ve heard about it.

Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen

God I’ve been “meaning to read this one” literally since it came out in like 2015 or something. I keep getting it from the library, sitting it on the shelf, and then turning it back in without reading it. At least with this one I have a reason though. Sarah Dessen was a favorite back in high school and I was excited to see another book by her, but I suddenly got it into my head that if it somehow disappointed me (something no Dessen novel has ever done) I might not be able to love her other books quite the same as I have. So basically I psyched myself out…

The Forgotten Sisters (Princess Academy, book 3) by Shannon Hale

This is another one that I’ve been intending to get to for ages. I even reread the first two books to prepare for reading this one. And yet… I’m going to blame the second book, because it was completely unmemorable (it wasn’t bad though) so how am I supposed to go on to the third?

The Bone Witch (The Bone Witch, book 1) by Rin Chupeco

I was so excited when this book came out and I heard so many great things, so I got it from the library as soon as it was available. And then I read it right away! Not… I put it on the library shelf and looked at it sometimes with the best of intentions, but never quite in the exact right mood for it apparently. (That’s just an excuse, I’m just bad at follow-through!)

What are some books you meant to read last year, but didn’t get around to?

First Lines Fridays: January 27, 2017

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

First Line:

“In all your life, your only choice,” Aunt Léonie said to her once, “is the path of needles or the path of pins.” Rachelle remembered that, the day that she killed her.

Crimson Bound by Rosamund Hodge

When Rachelle was fifteen she was good—apprenticed to her aunt and in training to protect her village from dark magic. But she was also reckless— straying from the forest path in search of a way to free her world from the threat of eternal darkness. After an illicit meeting goes dreadfully wrong, Rachelle is forced to make a terrible choice that binds her to the very evil she had hoped to defeat.

Three years later, Rachelle has given her life to serving the realm, fighting deadly creatures in an effort to atone. When the king orders her to guard his son Armand—the man she hates most—Rachelle forces Armand to help her find the legendary sword that might save their world. As the two become unexpected allies, they uncover far-reaching conspiracies, hidden magic, and a love that may be their undoing. In a palace built on unbelievable wealth and dangerous secrets, can Rachelle discover the truth and stop the fall of endless night?

Inspired by the classic fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood, Crimson Bound is an exhilarating tale of darkness, love, and redemption.

(This is a standalone novel, not part of the Cruel Beauty Universe.)

I saw this one on someone else’s book blog and just from one quote I knew I had to read it!

Have you read Crimson Bound? If so I’d love to know your thoughts.
