  1. The Raven Cycle // Maggie Stiefvater
Well I had to put this series first because it’s the one I’m the most grateful to booklr for convincing me to read. I had seen The Raven Boys (book 1) on a shelf before, but had specifically not even picked it up because of the title. Then even when I did pick it up and read the blurb, I remember thinking it would be just a dumb romance about private school boys and setting it back down! (I’m ashamed to even admit that…) So it wasn’t until several posts from booklr peeps and direct cajoling from a reader friend that I finally decided to give it a chance.
  2. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
This book comes second because I think it’s the second most important in that it taught me not to blindly trust booklr hype! I reviewed it, if you want to know more, but long story short: booklr straight lied to me about this book; it was trash.
  3. The Lunar Chronicles // Marissa Meyer
I was pretty resistant to reading this one, but now that I have I can’t remember what my reasoning was… I should have known I would enjoy a sci-fi fairytale retelling series!
  4. Snow Like Ashes (Snow Like Ashes, book 1) by Sara Raasch
Anyone on booklr knows how all over this series the community was for a while there. I bought into the hype of course, because I’m weak, and found this to be a pretty enjoyable book. I was reading it when I went to sign my pre-trial diversion paperwork and my lawyer and I talked about it at length. (Apparently it’s one she recommends all the time.) Unfortunately I couldn’t get into the sequel despite repeated tries and wound up abandoning the series.
  5. Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children // Ransom Riggs
This is another series I am so grateful to the booklr community for recommending! There’s just so much to love about this series. The first time around, back in 2014, I really liked the story, but I don’t think I appreciated it as much as I did when I went back and reread it at the beginning of this year.

I’d love to know about some books the online book community you are a part of convinced you to read! Comment or make your own post and leave me a link.

Completed: We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Spending the summers on her family’s private island off the coast of Massachusetts with her cousins and a special boy named Gat, teenaged Cadence struggles to remember what happened during her fifteenth summer.

This book was insanely hyped up on tumblr, so I read it, and honestly I couldn’t have been more disappointed.

I won’t go on a rant here; I’ll try to be succinct: The characters were flat, none of them were remotely likable, the story wasn’t that interesting, the plot twist didn’t feel at all cathartic as a plot twist should (nor was it shocking), and to be completely honest the only thing I cared about in the entire book was the dogs.

Addition: I also couldn’t stand the writing style. I defy anyone to find ten whole sentences that are longer than 5 or 6 words.

It’s a shame really because with this premise the book had a lot of potential and I just feel it was wasted. I can’t for the life of me figure out why it was so popular on booklr….

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

Okay so I read “We Were Liars” this afternoon. I didn’t intend to read the whole book today, but it was a faster read than I expected.

Sarcasm Time

It was a great book though. But like one of those that you know it’s great and you are glad you read it, but you probably won’t read again, you know? But seriously well-written and I do love me some imagery in a book. Totally understand why everyone kept saying to read it.

Sarcasm Over

The real liars were the people telling me this was going to be a good book…

Major spoiler down below. Don’t look thinking it’s some mild spoiler if you haven’t read the book already (and you actually think it’s worth reading for some freaking reason) because it will spoil the entire fucking book and you will hate yourself for looking and me for spoiling. So just don’t. Unless you’ve read the book or don’t care about spoiling an entire book, in which case you should highlight the text below and see my main thought upon completing the novel.

[start] ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME I WENT THROUGH ALL THAT AND THOSE FUCKERS WERE FUCKING DEAD ALL ALONG!!????!?!!!!?

FUCK EVERYTHING

*sigh* [end]
