Currently Reading:  Mind Games (Mind Games, book 1) by Kiersten White

I’m not very far in, ~30% according to Goodreads, so I don’t have much of an idea how to feel about this book yet. So far I find it a little depressing, a little intriguing, a little frustrating, in almost equal measure.

I think this is just another example of my over-empathy for fictional characters making a book difficult. One sister has spent all of her time so far feeling mostly anxious and trapped, the other has spent all her time feeling anxious and trapped and mega angry. All this adds up to one anxious over-empathetic reader!

I’m certain once things start happening I’ll be able to enjoy it better. I do already like what of the plot I understand.

Recently Finished:  We Are Okay by Nina LaCour

Oh, this book! Thank you, Nina, for this excellent book!

It’s been a long time since I read a depiction of grief and loss and anxiety that so closely mirrored my own symptomatology. Usually it’s prettied up quite a bit, made to seem romantic, but this book was honest. (That isn’t to say there isn’t some poetic turns of phrase, just that it’s not about being pretty, it’s about painting a true picture.)

I read it easily, despite the heavy subject matter, which isn’t something I usually manage to do.

I’ve already got this very thing written in my October Wrap-Up for this book, but I’m going to say it here too:  Reading this book reminded me of reading a Cynthia Voigt book. I’m talking specifically about the way the writing moves the reader through the story, weightless and effortlessly. (I talk about Cynthia a lot in my blog, so if you’ve read more than just this post you already know how much I admire her and love her work, and you know I could give no higher compliment to a novel.)

I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Reading Next:  Unmade (The Lynburn Legacy, book 3) by Sarah Rees Brennan

I started this, but only barely, not enough to count, and then I got kind of slumpy and decided to set it aside till later in the month. Well, it’s later…

I’m going to make it my mission to finish this book and get a review up by the 29th when it is due back via Interlibrary Loan. Should I fail, I will have to re-request it and wait at least 2 weeks for it to be shipped back to us, which is just ridiculous and wasteful. So hopefully I don’t fail.

To be clear, it’s not that I feel the book is bad or boring, I just got a little slumpy and it wasn’t helped by the fact that I didn’t see how they could possibly turn things around at this point.

Perfect Lies (Mind Games, book 2) by Kiersten White

I’ve also got a hold on this one at the library, it should be available for me in 2 days or so, and if the first book, Mind Games, goes as well as I anticipate, I’ll want it immediately!

Hopefully I manage my time well enough to not let this book interfere with Unmade, but I know myself and my time management skills well enough to make no promises on that front.

I’ve no idea what to expect in this novel, except that the very first line of the Goodreads summary (which I am trying not to actually read since I’m still working on book 1) says in big bold letters: “Annie and Fia are ready to fight back.” So as you can imagine I am hopeful!

Currently Reading:  Sons from Afar (The Tillerman Cycle, book 6) by Cynthia Voigt
I didn’t actually intend to do more on the Tillerman Cycle books before finishing the Lynburn Legacy, but I got like borderline slumpy, so I figured going for books I know I enjoy would be better. We’ll see if it actually helps.

Sons from Afar was actually one of my least favorite in the seven book series, but since I haven’t read it in a while, I’m wondering if my opinion will change any.

That being said, it’s still just as amazing as the rest of The Tillerman Cycle.

Unmade (The Lynburn Legacy, book 3) by Sarah Rees Brennan
I’m not very far into this one yet, but I anticipate enjoying it just as much as the other two. This book isn’t the reason for my current slump-ish-ness.

So far I’ve spent the beginning of this book worrying about Jared and annoyed at Kami’s mother. Like if I stop and really consider things, I can understand why she’s reacting the way she is to everything, but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating to read about. I think maybe I just don’t like her at all…

And as usual, I’m still working my way through Persuasion by Jane Austen, and I’m ahead of schedule so that’s nice.

Recently Finished:  Come A Stranger (The Tillerman Cycle, book 5) by Cynthia Voigt
Like I mentioned earlier, I took a little break from Unmade to read on the Tillerman Cycle because I was slumpy. I think it might have been a book hangover from Dreams of Gods & Monsters.

This book is really special to me. I mean I love all the Tillerman books, but this one was one of those perfect storm sort of books. It dealt with some things pretty personal to me at exactly the right time in my life. I don’t think I’d have dealt with some things nearly as well without Mina’s perspective in my mind from reading this book. If someone were to ask me for coming-of-age recommendations, this would be a top one for sure.

Reading Next:  Seventeen Against the Dealer (The Tillerman Cycle, book 7) by Cynthia Voigt
I love how synchronistic it is that the series begins and ends with Dicey.

I look forward to reading this one again with the change in perspective that being older gives; I haven’t read it since I was a teenager.

After this one I’ve got literally no idea what I’m going to read so if anyone has a suggestion I’d love it.

Currently Reading:  Dreams of Gods & Monsters (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, book 3) by Laini Taylor
I’m halfway through this book and I have the worst feeling!

As I admitted previously, I don’t remember much of the goings-on in this book, just a few major plot points. So I can’t actually say that something bad is about to happen, but… I feel it! I feel the bad thing coming, y’all.

As it is, I’m mostly enjoying reading this one, even if I find the Stellians annoying and wish the narration wasn’t always so vague and mysterious!

I’m also, as always lately, working my way slowly through Persuasion by Jane Austen.

Recently Finished:  The Runner (The Tillerman Cycle, book 4) by Cynthia Voigt
Ah, man, it was nice to be in Bullet’s stubborn head again.

I’m still sad from the last chapter though. I’ll probably never get over the need to cry every time I read it. I’ll be rereading this book for the 57th time when I’m 80 and I’ll cry like a little baby over the Phone Call.

I will never understand how Bullet can draw me in so well. He’s not exactly a likeable person, and yet I love him. I’ll credit that to the magic of Cynthia Voigt’s writing. In fact, I give the magic of Cynthia’s writing credit for many things I care about.

Reading Next:  Unmade (The Lynburn Legacy, book 3) by Sarah Rees Brennan
Well, I managed to get this one on Interlibrary Loan, and faster than I expected, too.

I have no idea what to expect from the end of this trilogy… Goodreads promises the ending will be shocking, but that could just be hype to get people into reading it? (Yeah, even I don’t buy that.)

All I really hope for is an ending that makes sense, plenty of that banter I love, and for Jared to not stay where he was at the end of the last book because that would be awful!

I also plan to get to the next book in The Tillerman Cycle and then I’ve been thinking of rereading another series from back in high school. This one, The Gallagher Girls series, I actually can’t remember very well, but I do remember enjoying the two books I read of the series. Some posts on tumblr reminded me of it and I got it from the library in a fit of nostalgia. My only hesitation is wondering whether I will like it as well as I did when I was younger…

Currently Reading:  The Runner (The Tillerman Cycle, book 4) by Cynthia Voigt
This is one of my favorites of the Tillerman Cycle books. It focuses on Bullet Tillerman, the Tillerman Children’s late uncle, back before he left for the war in Vietnam.

I can’t wait to get back in Bullet’s head, honestly; he’s such a defiant little shit. Plus, it’s interesting to see how Gram was back when her husband was still alive and she wasn’t “crazy Abigail Tillerman” yet.

And as always, I’m also still working my way through Persuasion by Jane Austen. It’s not quite as torturous as it was originally, but I don’t know if that will last… I hope it will.

Recently Finished:  Days of Blood & Starlight (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, book 2) by Laini Taylor
I literally just finished this book 5 minutes ago… This was my second time reading it.

I had a little trouble halfway through the book because Karou’s situation feels so hopeless that I started feeling hopeless too. Luckily, all I needed was a short break and I was able to get right back into the story.

I have forgotten a few things from last time I read it though. Like the whole bit with the White Wolf towards the end. I won’t get into details because it’s spoilery, but damn.

Untold (The Lynburn Legacy, book 2) by Sarah Rees Brennan
I finished Untold just before DoBaS. I was a little nervous about Second Book Syndrome, but that didn’t happen and I enjoyed Untold quite a bit. Especially the banter between characters. I really am such a sucker for funny, sassy banter in novels and Sarah Rees Brennan excels at it!

I reviewed it too.

It looks like I will have to wait a while to read the third book though, because I have to get it through an Interlibrary Loan to get it. My local library only has the first two books in the trilogy for some unknown, but deeply annoying reason. (They do that a lot actually.)

Try as I might…. I’m not sure I really remember anything specific from this book?? Which I didn’t realize until just now…

So I guess it’s a good thing I’m rereading the series, huh?

I never bothered to read the novella for the series, but I think I might this time around? But I still haven’t quite decided if I should read it before DoGaM where it fits chronologically, or read it after I finish the whole series the way it was published.

Currently Reading:  Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, book 1) by Laini Taylor
I had been wanting to reread this series for a while;, and now that I’m stuck waiting for the sequel to Strange the Dreamer, I think this is the perfect time.

I read this the first time with Mary at Books and Cookies, but that was years ago apparently!

Who knows, I may even try to review them this time around since I’m (hopefully) likely to be less overwhelmed by how much I like it with the second reading.

And, of course, I’ll be reading another chapter of Persuasion this week.

Recently Finished:  Unspoken (The Lynburn Legacy, book 1) by Sarah Rees Brennan
I’m still fiddling around to see if I can come up with a whole review for this book. I have some thoughts, but I’m not sure it adds up to much.

I had never even heard of anyone doing a Young Adult book in the style of a Gothic novel before I was recommended this book. I’m glad I gave it a chance.

But honestly, y’all, that ending? I just sat there in shock like…what? What kind of complete 180??? I don’t want to say too much and spoil things, but seriously what?

Reading Next:  Untold (The Lynburn Legacy, book 2) by Sarah Rees Brennan
I’m looking forward to continuing this series. I have to admit I don’t see how they can possibly go anywhere else from where the last book ended!

As always with a sequel, I’m wary of Second Book Syndrome, but we shall see. If the dialogue is as enjoyable as the first book I don’t think I’ll have too much trouble.

And, seriously, this book better explain that ending from Unspoken or I swear I will throw something…

I’m also waiting for the last four Tillerman Cycle books to come in from the public library, so cross your fingers for me that I get those this week because I want to finish rereading that series too. (Someone please motivate me to set up my home library so I can just read my own copies of my favorite books!)

Currently Reading:  When the Moon Was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore
I haven’t gotten very far in this one yet, I’ve been in a weird headspace, but what I have read so far I really like!

The writing is beautiful and the story is interesting. I am really excited to see what unfolds next. The imagery especially gets me. As I read I can see everything unfolding in my mind like some kind of painting and I love it.

I’m also really excited about all the representation in this book! It’s so refreshing!

Recently Finished:  Dicey’s Song (The Tillerman Cycle, book 2) by Cynthia Voigt
I did not mean to read this one so fast! (I started it an hour or so after I finished Hitchhiker’s Guide and just read straight through till 2am when I realized I was at the end!)

I definitely shed some tears there at the end, but it was cathartic and everything else was satisfying and left me feeling quite content.

I’ve been trying to read this series slowly this time around so I can make it last, because Cynthia Voigt is my all time favorite author.

Reading Next:  A Solitary Blue (The Tillerman Cycle, book 3) by Cynthia Voigt
This is the first book to diverge from following the four Tillerman children from Dicey’s POV. Instead, we follow Dicey’s new friend Jeff.

Under normal circumstances I might be annoyed at the POV shift, but Jeff is a sweetheart and his story is interesting. It gives insight into his character that I appreciate.

Currently Reading:  The Cursed Queen (The Impostor Queen, book 2) by Sarah Fine
I’m not loving the way cutting is being addressed so far, but I’m only in the first chapter. I hope this book will turn out to not glorify self-harm…

That aside, I’m definitely looking forward to learning more about the world outside Kupari. When I was reading the first one I found myself wondering what the rest of the world must think of them.

I don’t know if I will struggle with this book, but if I do, I have Dicey’s Song, the second in the Tillerman Cycle, to reread alongside this.

Recently Finished:  Strange the Dreamer (Strange the Dreamer, book 1) by Laini Taylor
I loved this book! It hurt me a little, but I forgive it because the story was so lovely and enjoyable.

The problem with loving this book though? Now I have to wait ages for the next one to find out what on earth happens to all those beloved characters! I’m so worried about them!

Actually, reading this one has me wanting to reread Laini’s other books, so I grabbed them from the library too.

Specials (Uglies, book 3) by Scott Westerfeld
This whole series is so easy to breeze through, I’m glad I chose to reread it.

I very much wish I could be a special, only I hope they wouldn’t adjust my brain because I already have problems with anger management and impulse control!

I still don’t know if I want to reread Extras (book 4), but I might…

Trigger Warning:  Self-harm (cutting, some passing mention of burning). Only one character really treats it like it’s a bad thing, everyone else treats it as normal and/or good for the majority of the book.

Homecoming (The Tillerman Cycle, book 1) by Cynthia Voigt
I honestly didn’t intend to read this so quickly. I meant to read it in-between reading The Cursed Queen, but once I started I couldn’t read anything else until I’d finished it. And I also couldn’t bring myself to put it down for any significant amount of time.

There is some indescribable quality in Cynthia Voigt’s books that always leaves me feeling great and looking at the world in a very specific way (that also happens to be indescribable). It’s really so enjoyable.

I also really love the Tillermans. I feel, and have felt since the first time I ever read this book, like they are somehow my family too.

Reading Next:  Ash by Malinda Lo
I’ve had this one from the library for a while, long enough that I can’t remember when I got it, so I think it’s time to actually read it! I always love a fairytale retelling.

I’ve heard good things on tumblr so I’m fairly confident going in that this will be a decent book. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where Lo has taken the classic Cinderella story. I’m also especially excited at the prospect of a non-heterosexual protagonist. YA Fantasy is my favorite genre and it’s so rare to find queer representation in it so the existence of this book is already refreshing.

Currently Reading:  Strange the Dreamer (Strange the Dreamer, book 1) by Laini Taylor
I’m not very far into this one yet because I hit a bit of a slump for a few days, but I really like it so far. I love the way Lazlo thinks. Except for the part where he doesn’t try to just straight murder Thyon Nero. Fuck that guy…

I’ve just gotten into Part II and I’m fascinated by the blue people! I’m still not all that sure who they are or how they play into things, but I am definitely fascinated and eager to find out more!

It’s also just really refreshing reading a book about someone who loves books and words and stories.

I’m still working on Specials by Scott Westerfeld (I’m trying not to rush through it because it’s just an easy reread) and of course Persuasion by Jane Austen.

Recently Finished:  Crashed (Cold Awakening, book 2) by Robin Wasserman
I reviewed this book.

I’m glad I got back to this story. Wasserman gave a masterful depiction of prejudice and institutional oppression. I don’t want to put it all down to Wasserman’s being Jewish, that would feel like I was disregarding her intelligence and writing ability, but I don’t doubt her heritage played some part in making her so good at accurately portraying an allegory for racism.

I still maintain that I don’t really like any of the main characters personality-wise, but I don’t think that detracts much from my enjoyment of the story, and anyway it’s just a personal preference.

Reading Next:  The Cursed Queen (The Imposter Queen, book 2) by Sarah Fine
I got my hands on this one and despite my problems with the writing of the first book, I’m eager to know what happens next in the story. In fact, I read the first bit of this one to see if I wanted to use it in a First Lines Fridays post and found myself reading past the prologue and into the first chapter!

I did notice mention of some sort of marks that indicate how good a warrior is, which seem to be self-harm. I’m a little worried about that and I really hope this doesn’t go the way of Carve the Mark with glorification of self-harm… I’m hoping that Fine won’t do that though.

Homecoming (The Tillerman Cycle, book 1) by Cynthia Voigt
I have been wanting to reread The Tillerman Cycle for a while now, and this seems as good a time as any.

I love Cynthia Voigt’s writing style. I’ve mentioned this before I think, but I’ve noticed there are some books that just completely change the way you look at the world. Cynthia’s books are like that. It doesn’t matter how many times I read them, they always make me see things in such a unique way, a way I can’t quite manage without Cynthia’s writing voice.

Currently Reading:  Crashed (Cold Awakening, book 2) by Robin Wasserman
Lia is slowly becoming slightly less annoying, so that’s good news! Jude, on the other hand, is not getting any less annoying.

I’ve taken to entertaining myself by shipping Lia and Riley. That is to say, I don’t actually care whether they date or just form a good friendship, as long as one of those things happens!

I just wish Lia would try to figure things out a bit more!

I’m glad I got myself back to this series. Not sure where I’m going to get the third book in the trilogy though! (My library doesn’t have it…)

Specials (Uglies, book 3) by Scott Westerfeld
This is my favorite book in the Uglies series. I find the Specials fascinating.

I also like that we get to see a lot more of Shay in this one like we did back in Uglies. I know I’m not exactly meant to like her, but I really do.

I feel I should warn potential readers:
There are mentions of self-harm that could be triggering to some readers. The narration doesn’t seem to portray it as a good thing, but some of the characters do.

Persuasion by Jane Austen
And as will probably be the case for most of the rest of the year, I’m still working my way slowly through Persuasion. I really hope something interesting happens so I can find the will to read more than one chapter a week!

Recently Finished:  Pretties (Uglies, book 2) by Scott Westerfeld
I’ve read this one 2 or 3 times now (2 that I have a record of, but I could swear I read it another time before…)

Despite all the New Pretty slang that makes everything they talk/think about sound vapid and stupid, I really enjoy watching Tally work her way through problems and situations.

I do wish she would have thought of Shay a little more often! Or at least, would have acted on those thoughts. Not that I’m shocked, she did the same thing back in Uglies. Tally tends to forget Shay whenever she meets a guy.

Again I should mention a trigger warning for self-harm, although there are much fewer mentions in Pretties than in Specials.

The Impostor Queen (The Impostor Queen, book 1) by Sarah Fine
I reviewed this one, read it here.

This is one of those books I liked and didn’t like at the same time. Or I should say, I liked the story, but I didn’t enjoy reading the book all that much. Luckily, it makes up for occasionally being boring or annoying by being a quick read with good themes.

And I really do look forward to getting the sequel from the library. I’m interested to see how things turn out, and also whether my predictions turn out to be true. (Also I guess I’m hoping it will be a little more enjoyable to read.)

Reading Next:  Strange the Dreamer (Strange the Dreamer, book 1) by Laini Taylor
I was able to buy this book new, which is something I don’t get to do very often, but at the time that it came in I was in the middle of another series and I put this one aside for later and then forgot it like a dummy.

I had been considering rereading Laini’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone series, which is what reminded me that I still hadn’t gotten down to reading Strange!

I’m really looking forward to this book, and if booklr is to be believed, I won’t be disappointed.

I haven’t decided yet if I will go ahead and reread the fourth book in the Uglies series, Extras, or not. I guess it depends on if I find myself needing an easy reread while reading some other book.

Currently Reading:  The Imposter Queen (The Imposter Queen, book 1) by Sarah Fine
I don’t know a whole lot about this book right now, but it feels like the right book to be starting after Jane Austen and Maureen Johnson.

It’s been on my TBR for long enough that I’m embarrassed to say exactly how long, and I’ve mentioned it in a First Lines Friday post as well.

I have high hopes for this book! It’s got fantasy and magic and royalty, what could go wrong? (I probably shouldn’t have said that…)

Recently Finished:  Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
Continuing my reread of Austen novels, I grabbed my second favorite of her novels. I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first time I read it, but I can’t really be too surprised considering that was 10 whole years ago!

And I finally realized what is different about the way Austen writes:  Her books read like very long, elaborate letters where the reader is the recipient! I love that!

I also love how she likes to state things as if it’s all praise and everything is lovely, but if you look past the initial words to the tone you realize she is having a dig at her own characters!
It reminds me of a thing my mom used to do. Someone would say something like “I almost got hit by a car!” and my mom would sweetly reply “I’m sorry you almost got hit by a car” and the person would thank her and go about their lives not noticing the subtle inflection on the word ‘almost’ which changes the entire meaning of the phrase!

The Last Little Blue Envelope (Little Blue Envelope, book 2) by Maureen Johnson
I started this a little early, before I had actually finished Sense and Sensibility. And I finished it faster than I expected as well.

I didn’t know I had a review in me until I sat down to write a few lines on Goodreads about who I would recommend the book to, but I did and you can read it here!

Did I mention I’m still not over the scene on page 101? You know, the scene where she gets toilet water in her hair and doesn’t wish she was still wearing it braided instead of loose and then just a few seconds later does wish she was still wearing it braided so she could feel Keith’s lips on her ear when he whispers something (and she still has toilet water hair) and then .02 seconds later is actually SWOONING LIKE A VICTORIAN LADY BECAUSE HER HORMONES ARE JUST TOO UNCONTROLLABLE! Because I’m still not over that scene even a little bit. If anything it’s getting worse.

Reading Next:  Crashed (Cold Awakening, book 2) by Robin Wasserman
This book was republished as ‘Shattered’ (and the series was previously called ‘Skinned’).

I’m going to do my best to get into Crashed because I don’t want to wait too long on this series and forget what happened in the first book.

I’m not worried the book is going to be bad or anything, I just hit a slump a while back that put me off reading it for a while. My only real concerns are Second Book Syndrome and the fact that the few times I saw Jude in book one (Skinned / Frozen) I thought he was too preachy…

I have a feeling it may be hard to get into at first (because of the SBS), but I’ll keep at it this time even if I add another book to the mix because I really want to complete this trilogy.
