A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
★★★☆☆ – liked it
UPDATE: Having read this again…. I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much. There’s a lot that just made me uncomfortable actually…. I have changed the rating to 3 stars, but I will probably never read this again.
I was so hesitant to read this because I was afraid it wouldn’t be as good as Hale’s YA/Middle Grade books that I had loved since I was younger. I was so dumb. I should have known better than to doubt Shannon Hale’s ability to sweep me up in a beautiful story.
If you want a novel with healthy relationships and a focus on platonic love, read The Actor and the Housewife ASAP.
★★★★☆ – really liked it
I really struggled with the first 8 or so chapters of this book because it was nothing but her internal freak-out about her husband cheating on her…
But once I got past that it was really good and I’m really glad I read it. It was moving and I loved the strong friendships it portrayed.
I definitely recommend it if you like women’s lit and don’t mind weeping for several chapters.
★★☆☆☆ – it was ok
The pacing of this book was weird. One minute it would be moving along at a good clip and then we’d have to stop and have a long internal monologue with Amy, making whatever action was going on just fall flat.
Other than that the story was good and the plot interesting. If you like retellings you will probably like this.
