Series That Got Worse with Each Book/Season

I opened this topic up to TV as well (which T5W is always open to by the way if you can’t think of book answers), but I think this topic is especially good for books and TV. What series started out strong but got increasingly worse with each book?  To participate in Top 5 Wednesday, just head over to their Goodreads Group and join the fun!

  1. Maze Runner Series // James Dashner
  2. Divergent Series // Veronica Roth
  3. The Inheritance Cycle // Christopher Paolini
  4. Gone Series // Michael Grant
  5. FUCKING MAZE FUCKING RUNNER

What book (or tv) series did you think started well enough, but just seemed to get worse and worse with each subsequent installment?

Completed: We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Spending the summers on her family’s private island off the coast of Massachusetts with her cousins and a special boy named Gat, teenaged Cadence struggles to remember what happened during her fifteenth summer.

This book was insanely hyped up on tumblr, so I read it, and honestly I couldn’t have been more disappointed.

I won’t go on a rant here; I’ll try to be succinct: The characters were flat, none of them were remotely likable, the story wasn’t that interesting, the plot twist didn’t feel at all cathartic as a plot twist should (nor was it shocking), and to be completely honest the only thing I cared about in the entire book was the dogs.

Addition: I also couldn’t stand the writing style. I defy anyone to find ten whole sentences that are longer than 5 or 6 words.

It’s a shame really because with this premise the book had a lot of potential and I just feel it was wasted. I can’t for the life of me figure out why it was so popular on booklr….

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

Okay so I read “We Were Liars” this afternoon. I didn’t intend to read the whole book today, but it was a faster read than I expected.

Sarcasm Time

It was a great book though. But like one of those that you know it’s great and you are glad you read it, but you probably won’t read again, you know? But seriously well-written and I do love me some imagery in a book. Totally understand why everyone kept saying to read it.

Sarcasm Over

The real liars were the people telling me this was going to be a good book…

Major spoiler down below. Don’t look thinking it’s some mild spoiler if you haven’t read the book already (and you actually think it’s worth reading for some freaking reason) because it will spoil the entire fucking book and you will hate yourself for looking and me for spoiling. So just don’t. Unless you’ve read the book or don’t care about spoiling an entire book, in which case you should highlight the text below and see my main thought upon completing the novel.

[start] ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME I WENT THROUGH ALL THAT AND THOSE FUCKERS WERE FUCKING DEAD ALL ALONG!!????!?!!!!?

FUCK EVERYTHING

*sigh* [end]
