Oh man, if you get in the mood for a Shannon Hale fairytale retelling, you should definitely try Book of a Thousand Days. It’s a standalone about a serving maid, Dashti, and her mistress, Lady Saren, who get bricked into a tower for seven years because Saren won’t marry who her father says to. The book is written as if it is Dashti’s diary of the time.

I agree about Princess Academy as a stand-alone.
No, I haven’t read The Book of a Thousand Days.

Yes! I’ve read 2 of the 3 Princess Academy books, but the first one is far and away the best of those two. I’d have been happy with that book as a standalone honestly. I love her habit of doing magic through languages. Bayern = Speaking to Nature; Princess Academy = Linder Speak; Book of a Thousand Days = Singing Magic

Speaking of which, if you haven’t read Book of a Thousand Days, you totally should!

I know, right? Have you read Princess Academy?
(The Bayern Books are still my favorites of hers, though.)

You’re the first person I’ve met who’s read it, excluding people I’ve forced it upon.
