It’s Not Over Yet…

So I went ahead and tortured myself with Twilight, and I think it may have helped, but I’m not done yet.

I’ve got about an hour before the NASA Live Stream I’m waiting on, so I’m going to read that draft of Twilight from Edward’s POV (Midnight Sun, I think it’s called) just for a laugh.

I feel like it’s going to be really, really emo. Wish me luck!

Twilight Torture

I’ve been stuck in the middle (not even the middle, like 20%) of Empire of Storms for weeks now. I’ve actually read like 4 other books since I got stuck… Which is good, because if I stop reading entirely while I’m stuck I’ll wind up in a full-on slump, but I’m getting really frustrated since I’ve been trying to finish the Throne of Glass series for literal years…

So basically I’ve been thinking about torturing myself.

Sometimes when I’m stuck for things to watch I will watch something really comically bad to sort of reset my brain. And I thought maybe I should try applying the same technique here.

Which brings me to the method of torture:  Twilight

I’m not sure I’d even be able to get through one of them because of the cringe factor, but if it works like tv/movies then it might reset my brain and let me get back into Empire of Storms. (Mostly because I would appreciate that it wasn’t Twilight…)

First Lines Fridays: March 30, 2018

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

First Lines:

The Austrian horses glinted in the moonlight, their riders standing tall in the saddle, swords raised. Behind them two ranks of diesel-powered walking machines stood ready to fire, cannon aimed over the heads of the cavalry.

Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld
(Leviathan, book 1)

Prince Aleksander, would-be heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, is on the run. His own people have turned on him. His title is worthless. All he has is a battletorn war machine and a loyal crew of men.

Deryn Sharp is a commoner, disguised as a boy in the British Air Service. She’s a brilliant airman. But her secret is in constant danger of being discovered.

With World War I brewing, Alek and Deryn’s paths cross in the most unexpected way…taking them on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure that will change both their lives forever.

Except when I was born. My god, I was so fat. I almost killed my mother. And while that’s gross, it’s completely true. If we lived in a time before cesarean sections, she wouldn’t have survived. (I would also like to thank cesarean sections for sparing me the mental anguish of knowing I once passed through my mother’s vaginal canal.)
