Oh I’m so relieved that I still liked this book. After the first two of my Sarah Dessen reread that I didn’t like as much, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to enjoy any of them as much as I used to. I’d say I can see some differences by being older when I reread this one, but it was just as good as it used to be. Plus there was a whole nostalgia factor.

So far so good on the Dessen Reread front! I am relieved to find I still like this one as well. Once again I found myself seeing things from a different perspective now that I’m older and have more life experience.

Favorite Thing:  Remy’s constant planning and sorting things out was somehow fun to experience.
Least Favorite Thing:  A weird amount of fat shaming in this book…

I think I like this one a little less than I used to. Not the story itself, that’s pretty much the same as I remember, but because of the constant fat shaming. The second anyone was the least bit bigger in this book there was some weird comment about it.

My problem with this book wasn’t so much that it was bad, just that it was a little boring to me. I think it’s just not my style. And as with all Duncan’s books it’s a little slow till three quarters through then it all wraps up quite quickly.

  2. Lying in bed, I could see out through both of the screened French doors, each of which framed a great sheet of empty sky. This sky, as seen through the north door, was pale blue and hazy; to the east, it was aglow with the flames of sunrise. I lay still for a time, watching, mesmerized, as the two spatial areas went through minute-by-minute alterations. The north sky grew brighter and clearer; the east sky softened to pink, and then, as shade melted into shade in fluid transition, became the same clear blue as its sister next door.
  3. Oh, suuuure, sign me up for the evil step-mom, toootally.

Lee is on page 35 of 210

I have already sussed out the fact that the step-family are immortal. Only have to figure out if it’s vampires or magic at this point. Yet the main character whose eyes I see everything through has yet to make a connection. This is why people should read fiction. How else is one to realize when their new step-family are immortal possible-monsters?

I was talking to my husband about the two books I am considering reading next and suddenly realized they are both really similar despite being not at all similar…?

Like my options are Locked in Time by Lois Duncan or Coraline by Neil Gaiman.

So basically: girl moves into a new house and weird, creepy shit happens OR girl moves into a new house and weird, creepy shit happens…

Also they both feature maternal figures as villains.

DID I MENTION I JUST MOVED INTO A NEW HOUSE WHICH I OFTEN STAY IN COMPLETELY ALONE OVERNIGHT???/

I’m so grateful to Kelsie @ BilboBookins for putting Gillian Flynn back on my radar and making me really consider reading her books and Marina @ The Review Marina for her review which put to rest my worries about whether having liked the movie, I could enjoy the book too. If it hadn’t been for these two I probably wouldn’t have picked up this amazing book at all and I’d have really missed out!

Favorite Thing:  Birle at the end, with Nan.
Least Favorite Thing:  The part at the slave market where that nasty fucker shoves his fingers in Birle’s mouth while he’s deciding if he wants to buy her. I literally had to stop reading and go brush my teeth, the passage evoked that visceral a response from me. (Actually I may need to again now just remembering…)

This one always gives me a little trouble during Part 1, because it moves slowly, but once I get past that, Parts 2 & 3 speed by so fast because this book is amazing.

Note:  Also published as The Tale of Birle, which is the copy I actually read this time, since I don’t have access to my own copy right now.

I decided to go on a Lois Duncan reading kick, and Gallows Hill was the first one I grabbed.

Favorite Thing:  I liked the mechanics of Karen’s gift. Especially the heightened sense of smell. That was interesting.

This was the second book on my Lois Duncan kick. I liked it better than the first one I think.
