First Lines Fridays: May 4, 2018

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

First Lines:

What was it I wanted to tell you? Was it the new T-shirt-ready saying I came up with:  “There’s no room for demons when you’re self-possessed”?

Shockaholic by Carrie Fisher

Infused with Carrie Fisher’s trademark incisive wit and on the heels of Wishful Drinking’s instant New York Times bestselling success, Shockaholic takes readers on another rollicking ride into her crazy life.

There is no shortage of people flocking to hear what Princess Leia has to say. Her previous hardcover, Wishful Drinking, was an instant New York Times bestseller and Carrie was featured everywhere on broadcast media and received rave reviews from coast to coast, including People (4 stars; one of their top 10 books of the year), Entertainment Weekly, New York Times, and scores of others.

Told with the same intimate style, brutal honesty, and uproarious wisdom that placed Wishful Drinking on the New York Times bestseller list for months, Shockaholic is the juicy account of Carrie Fisher’s life, focusing more on the Star Wars years and dishing about the various Hollywood relationships she’s formed since she was chosen to play Princess Leia at only nineteen years old. Fisher delves into the gritty details that made the movie—and herself—such a phenomenal success, admitting, “It isn’t all sweetness and light sabers.”

That was the thing about words, they were clear and specific — chair, eye, stone — but when you talked about feelings, words were too stiff, they were this and not that, they couldn’t include all the meanings. In defining, they always left something out.

What Are You Reading Wednesday: May 2, 2018

What Are You Reading Wednesdays #WAYRW is a weekly feature on It’s A Reading Thing. Everyone is welcome to participate.

Grab the book you are currently reading and answer three questions:

  1. What’s the name of your current read?
  2. Go to page 34 in your book or 34% in your eBook and share a couple of sentences.
  3. Would you like to live in the world that exists within your book? Why or why not?

  1. The Martian by Andy Weir
  2. I’ve now grown accustomed to hearing the alarms blare at all times.
  3. UHM . . . No thank you I would prefer not to be stranded alone on Mars.

April 2018

Look at me actually getting the wrap-up posts out at the right time! I may be having a crappy-ish day, but at least my posts are punctual!

Non-Reading Stuff

The month started well. I wasn’t going out or anything, but I had the desire to sometimes. I was taking care of myself pretty well and since I’ve finally given in to my natural sleep cycle (7-9am through 3-5pm) and just gone full nocturnal, I’ve actually been doing pretty well at eating regularly, not sleeping all day, and even getting some things done around the house.

Of course the end of the month was less wonderful.

Let’s see… I spent a whole week completely outside of my home and spoke to strangers on a daily basis for that whole week. I’ve been making all kinds of phone calls, also to strangers. Scheduling and planning and care-taking. I’d say all things considered that’s pretty good. The reason was awful, a mom being in the hospital is always awful, but I was impressed by my ability to Do Things anyway.

And then post-hospital, the hubby and I have been doing a lot of extra stuff for my mom because she physically can’t right now. It’s all very stressful, but so far I’ve been managing to hold on to my little progress even if I’m not currently making any new progress.

Reading Stuff

I finished 9 books in April!
Check out the list of books and my fave/least fave things about them.

And most importantly, I managed to read all 3 of my April Challenge books from Book Club! Hurray! I just barely made it with Heartless, but whatever “barely made it” is still “made it” so there!

I got pretty distracted at the beginning of the month. I kept seeing things and reading them even though I was supposed to be reading other things, but no one ever accused me of having self-control before anyway.

Blogging Stuff

I didn’t manage to keep up with all my weekly book memes, but I did enough other blogging that I feel good about it this month. Even if half of my posts were painfully Twilight related…

Towards the end of the month I’ve been making a little more effort on my bookstagram posts. Instead of just randomly snapping a poorly lit picture of whatever I’m reading right there where I’m sitting, I’ve started trying for poorly lit photos with props and backdrops and things!

I haven’t been writing many full reviews, but I’ve done a couple minis so I’m satisfied there too.

Now if I can just keep this up for next month, I’ll be grand.
